PATHWAYS
Welcome to the 'Cycling Capital of New Zealand'. Across the Heretaunga Plains is the popular Hawke's Bay Trails network of cycling and walking off-road pathways linking Napier and Hastings as well as coastal and country settlements. You can ride along the coast from Bayview to Clifton, bike through estuaries near wildlife reserves, and cycle through the countryside to Puketapu, the Gimlett Gravels wineries or the Tukituki Valley (scroll down for distances).
Since the initial 2002 project, started by Napier City Mayor Barbara Arnott with Rotary clubs, Hastings District Council and HB Regional Council have worked together to help create Heretaunga Ararau - "the land of a hundred pathways". What began as the Rotary Pathways is now known as Hawke's Bay Trails, which are in turn part of Nga Haerenga, the New Zealand Cycle Trail project. Three distinct sections - the Landscapes Ride, the Water Ride and the Wineries Ride - form a 'Great Ride' of more than 200 kilometres. These trails add to the many cycling pursuits, events and activities on offer, and to the health, fitness and daily commute of many Hawke's Bay people.
Government funding has enabled this project, together with leadership and additional funding from Hawke's Bay Regional Council and an annual maintenance programme is funded by each of the Councils to maintain the quality of the trail surface and the facilities. Seats alongside the trail at Clive and Haumoana have been donated by the community.
